Homeless Doggie Fatboy is Loved and Cherished.

This is a picture of Shelley, Joy and me with Fatboy. Fatboy is a homeless dog who lives on the streets of Durham, N.C. Fatboy might be homeless but, he is not alone. Fatboy has a human companion named Troy. Troy suffers from severe social anxiety and fear. He adopted Fatboy about six weeks ago. Fatboy has someone to love and care for him and Troy has a loving and faithful companion to help him have less anxiety and fear. Troy & Fatboy are part of our lives. We make sure Fatboy has food. We also make sure Troy has food, shelter and the other things he needs for life. During December Troy will travel home to be with family for a short time. Fatboy will need a place to stay and be loved and cared for during troy's absence.

During this upcoming season of thanksgiving and love and celebration and giving; Do not forget our neighbors who are struggling each day to be feed, clothed and sheltered. We will gladly take ALL donations and make sure folks like Troy and doggies like Fatboy are cared for.

The best five bucks I've spent in a long time.

I am a sucker for books. I am a giant sucker for cheap books. About twice or three times per year I end up spending some time of the Barnes & Noble website. I browse through the reduced/remainders section looking for treasure. I find good books, O.K. books and just a few that I order and then find myself disappointed I spent that $2.99, but that does not happen much.

I saw this book and ordered it:
1. Because I grew up with Mr. Rogers on PBS TV
2. Who does not LOVE Mr. Rogers.
3. I love reading and learning about friendship.
4. We would all love a friend like Mr. Rogers.

I was not disappointed. Oh, that each of us will find and have a friend like Fred Rogers. It is my book of the year and it was bought from the remainders bin. The best $5.00 book I have purchased in a long time.

Hinton Kitchen/Bath Renovations right before Christmas.

We started this kitchen renovation on Wednesday. We tore out the counter tops, back splash and sink. Wednesday afternoon we were to fabricate the tops out of Meganite (a solid surface material). The freight company dropped the ball and by Thursday morning the product was still in Atlanta. R&L Shipping has had a bad week as far as I am concerned! Yesterday morning they shipped the pallets to China Grove, NC where they would be by 2:30pm yesterday. My associate Kevin contacted R&L to verify the order was on the manifest, it was according to the company computers. Kevin drove the diesel truck and 20' to pick up the order and save time. After 3 hours driving he found the order in the China Grove terminal for R&L Shipping...one small box full of adhesive. The large pallets were still in Atlanta...

4 tanks of diesel fuel..................$250.00

Pizza for a family with
no kitchen.................................$40.00

A shipping company
that delivers on time..................PRICELESS

An update: We finished the fabrication on Saturday morning and spent most of the day installing the new counter tops, new sink and new faucet set. It looks great! I'll post photos soon.

Blackwater Falls and tons of laughter

The temps were great and the skies were blue while I walked to the falls. Jarrod, Ingrid, Phil and Sherry and I enjoyed our light conversation and vigorous hike to see and hear the falls.
We kicked around Davis and Thomas and finally headed up into the mountains to find the gang and make sure Len Sweet made it in from Morristown, NJ safely. i am now heading to bed and looking forward to the rest of the weekend with friends.

Country roads take me home...

I'll be leaving in a few hours for a drive to West Virginia. It has become an annual trip for me. I'll spend the weekend with folks who have become my friends the last five years. Len Sweet, his brother John, Lisa and Will Sampson, Jarrod Hunt, Ingrid Flowers, Lan Leavell, Missi Wilson, Mom Wilson and a handful of others who are faces and memories. We will talk about Jesus, the future of the church and things as trivial as cigars and whiskey. We will share our meals together and pray for and with each other.

A great deal of the time I will spend looking at the mountains, soaking up the air and asking a simple question; "God, am I still where you want me doing what you want me to do?" It sounds simple, but life revolves around that question everyday. To walk with God and to walk on the "right" road with Him. If you stumble across this post the next few days, take a moment and pray for me and my family as we continue to walk with God into the future not forgetting the past.

Traveling with a friend through life...

Larry is my friend. Not only is he my friend but he is a leader in our faith community. He would not see himself as such, he would see all the flaws he struggles with every day. I have watched and walked with him through our life with God now for over ten years. In many ways, our path toward and with God has run a parallel path. That has much to do with our time growing up in church. In other ways, our paths have traveled in totally different directions, that has much to do with life experiences and choices the both of us have made along the way.

In all, it has been a life changing experience not only knowing him, but watching as God has worked and walked in Larry's life. As I think back, it is plain to see how God has also worked so slowly and clearly in mine. Many times, seeing God work in and with those close to us is a mirror to help us see how much God is doing in us.

Larry's latest post is excellent. I hope you will read and enjoy.

Post 301...friends, romans, countrymen...

I discovered blogging around 2001. I soon experimented with team blogging, which was fun as long as the topic was not to narrow. A narrow topic ended up with a blog that soon ran out of steam. I then attempted a congregational blog, asking each member to contribute a post in a rolling, rambling conversation. A few folks posted consistently, for a while...those same few folks are blogging still and there blogs appear in my friends and family side bar.

All the while I had WoodShavings, this place where I would leave my thoughts and ideas. Around 2003, this blog became almost exclusive full of my anger and feelings after a church slip. I wrote for several months and then let the whole mess sit for a year. After that time, I came back to WoodShavings and my lovely wife spoke words of great wisdom to me, "Delete it, delete all of it.", simple words I followed and here we are 302 posts later. Much of what is here is total drivel, but if you look, you might find a gem or two along the way.

In celebration, I have decided to list in no particular order the blogs I read on a regular basis. Most are in my RSS feed, but I prefer to click on each link from my blog list or bookmarks...that for me is a reading ritual. It is a time to think, ponder and grow as I click and read.

All of them accompany me on my journey toward my heavenly home.

Big paintings = God's kingdom on earth, touching people, where they live and work and play...

Dan Nelson started the painting above at 12 noon May 17. He set-up his giant easel as a part of Artplosure 2008.

This is the same painting at 3pm Sunday, May 18. Dan finished the painting at 6pm Sunday evening, the painting was then sold to the high bidder of a silent auction that went on while he painted. At 3pm, the price was around $550.00.

Dan is an artist. He paints big. He paints small. He illustrates books.
He paints portraiture. He draws on sidewalks with chalk. He draws/paints architecture. He draws cartoons. Dan plays several instruments. Dan sings. Dan writes music. Dan is an artist.

Dan is also a pastor. Dan planted and lead a church for several years. They would meet on Saturday in Moore Square in Raleigh, NC. They would make music and eat food together, inviting any and all in the park to join along. On weekends, Dan would set-up his giant easel and paint and talk to people as they passed by. Dan met many people and a church grew. Dan painted and pastored for several years, then decided to move the church to a home church. After five years of home church, Dan spends his Sundays painting all over the area. After many years of church, Dan is now part of the fastest growing Christian community in North America. Dan is one of the many Christians who is no longer a member of a church. Most Sundays he never even attends a church.

Dan is an artist, a musician and probably a better pastor now than he ever was when he was pastoring/attending a church.

DO NOT spend tens of thousands of $$$$ on a wedding...it's foolish.

I perform weddings on a regular basis. It is part of being a pastor I enjoy most. I enjoy helping a nervous couple through what is a simple process of becoming legally, "man and wife", helping them be at ease from the rehearsal through the formal part of the service. I enjoy most the weddings of folks I know.

Yesterday, I officiated the wedding of Hannah Gwaltney to Eric Piper. Eric is a computer geek from Grants Pass Oregon while Hannah calls Durham home. Hannah is the oldest daughter of dear family friends Will and Carrie Gwaltney. Will and Carrie have a great family and we are truly blessed to have them in our family life.

It always brings me great joy when a couple decides not to break the bank of family and friends to hold a wedding celebration. You do NOT have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to produce a beautiful wedding. After twenty years of officiating, let me tell you this one wedding truth; the larger and more expensive a wedding, the more stress that will be piled on bride, brides' mother, groom and family. My many wedding experiences have borne this out. With a large expensive wedding: there are a few folks that experience great joy on the wedding day, the florist, the photographer, the cake baker, the caterer, the dress makers, the formal wear rental agent, the party rental salesman, the limo company and the banker that gave daddy an equity loan. They leave the wedding with pockets full of $$$$$, whats not to be happy about;-)

Eric and Hannah were far too wise and much too frugal to go with Brides Magazine and the multi-billion dollar industry standard. They listened to the advice of Will and Carrie and carefully looked at the assets they had. Will and Carrie, Eric and Hannah looked for a facility that could handle about fifty to seventy-five guests that could also double as the banquet area. They found a local eatery in down town Raleigh that turned out to be a great choice.

Eric and Hannah had their wedding celebration at The Red Room. The Red Room is a tapas lounge on S. Gregson St along a trendy section of the capital city. Hanna had shown me pictures a few weeks ago, but when I got there Saturday morning, I saw they had made a great decision. The RR staff had set up what could be called a small "sanctuary" on one side of the eatery, while tables and preparations were going on on the other side. A center aisle with seating on both sides gave the effect of a small chapel in Europe with the dark, rich colors of the interior. A glass wall was on one side looking out on the activity of Raleigh, but as the wedding was at 11am, the streets were virtually empty until after the ceremony and photos had taken place.

We had a quick rehearsal and the ladies went off to change clothes. Eric and his groomsmen looked sharp in matching suits and ties, which by the way, they will be able to use at a later date for job interviews. Hannah's father and brothers were also dressed in business suits and were the vision of proper wedding attire. As we waited for guests to arrive and the ladies to change clothes, folks were able to visit. The RR staff was busy, cooking food and making preparation for a party. They had ample wait staff, bar staff and at least two managers directing the operation.

At 11am the guests had arrived and all was ready. The music for the processional began, being played over the lounges sound system and directed by the brides' brother. All the ladies were wearing spring colors and all the dresses, save the brides, will easily be used again in the future. The beauty of the simple bouquets was only eclipsed by the beauty of the brides' mother Carrie;) Hannah looked great in her white gown and all went off well. The guests were asked to step outside while photos were made and the eatery went from chapel to banquet hall.

The photos were handled by a family friend who is VERY good with a camera and will be a tiny fraction of the cost of a big-name-professional. Before 12 noon the photos were made and the party began. The Red Room did an awesome job with food and wait staff. The food was served on the bar in front of the open kitchen and the smells of Spain were in the air as all feasted on great food. Check out the menus on line, they served us everything on the tapas menu, plus all three of the paellas. In my humble opinion, The Red Room would be a great choice for anyone who wants folks to remember the party after a wedding instead of the color of the bridesmaids' dresses.

Will and Carrie, Eric and Hannah spent the money where it really matters, in throwing a great party AFTER what is in reality a 10 minute ceremony. Six months after a BIG EXPENSIVE wedding, 95% of the folks in attendance will NOT remember the color of the dresses, the flowers, the music, etc... They will remember great food, great music, great wine(if you like) and a great party. Spend your money on the party, all the rest really does not matter. The other 5% percent that will remember, they have been brain washed by a multi-billion dollar wedding industry that desires to separate you from your money. Don't fall into the trap and damn the social section of your local news paper.

May God bless Eric and Hannah Piper as they form a new family to bless this planet with more of God's life!

Monday update: Carrie weighs in with her view as the brides' mom.

Bare Feet are for Beaches...

I have a friend that graduated from Duke University. He is a smart fella that helps folks invest money and he is good at his work. After marriage to another Duke grad, they decided to make Durham their home. The family of six now lives in a house built in late 1967 or early 1968. The age of the house was simple to figure out, the porcelain of the basement toilet was stamped with September 11, 1967 as the date the toilet was made forty years ago.

Parts of the house are starting to show the forty years of life and families that have called the place home. The kitchen is dated in size and layout, the windows are not energy efficient, the exterior needs to be painted about every five years, and the plumbing has small leaks. One of the small leaks happened to be in a drain pipe where two full bathrooms come together. You have the wear and tear of two toilets, two showers and three vanity sinks flowing through this one drain pipe. Made of three inch copper the drain pipe had seen better days. Years of mineralized water had finally rotted a small split in the bottom of the pipe.

This family called me to make the repair, which I was glad to do. Last Friday I was there and decided the pipes needed to dry out before repairs were made. The family was going to use the basement bath for the weekend and on Monday I would return to make the needed repair.

Over the weekend, my friend and patriarch of this Durham family decided to replace the flush valve of the basement toilet. A simple household repair for the DIYer. Remember this, when you have only one toilet working over a weekend and six people living in a house, DO NOT attempt to upgrade the flush valve of a forty year old toilet, it WILL anger the old plumbing, old toilet, don't work on a Sunday after noon gremlins. In forty year old toilets there is ALWAYS one rusted bolt. On Sunday after noon this wonderful man, father, husband, financial guru tempted fate. In the process he broke the toilet tank and sharp chunks of sharp porcelain fell on his foot...and cut it...deeply...to the point he had to go to the ER on Mother's Day after noon and receive nine stitches. How did the sharp porcelain cut his foot? This intelligent man was involved in a DIY project barefooted.

Story ends now. You need not further explanation. I will end with this....
DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY HOME REPAIR IN YOUR BARE FEET.

A difficult few days....

On Thursday night Brittany Custer was killed in a motorcycle accident. She was the first cousin of Russ Creech who lives with my family. Creech's family and Brittany's family lived on land owned by their Grandfather who passed away several years ago. Their Grandmother still lives in the "homeplace" and cares for her two children and six grandchildren with great passion. The funeral is this afternoon. Please pray for the Custer/Creech family.

Fried Green Tomato BLT...

I am renovating a bathroom in an old house in Durham. Don't believe all you here about the Bull City. It is full of great folks and has some of the best food, music and art in all the southeast. Working there for me is always a thrill, as I will usually see someone I have known my whole life or have met along the way.

Milton is one of those I met along the way. He and his wife Ginger are fairly new to the Triangle. Not only will they add much to the mix of D town, they will be a blessing to all they meet. Ginger is the new pastor of Pilgrim UCC Church. I truly feel the congregation gets a twofer with Milton and Ginger.

Milton is a chef at Watts Grocery; one of the many fine eateries in the growing food family of Durham. Yesterday he brought and bought me lunch to my jobsite. It was a Fried Green Tomato sandwich and fresh cut fries. Milton, Kevin(my trusty sidekick) and I, sat out on the front porch steps and ate as the traffic drove by on Hillandale Rd.
The food was delicious, but the conversation and friendship were truly filling. I will be hungry again, and need to find another sandwich, but I now have something of substance to carry with me from a conversation on front porch steps.

and one friend sharpens another."

Prayer for a friend...

This is my friend Lisa. She just left the U.S.A. for a few weeks. She is traveling to Swaziland with Children's HopeChest. She is traveling with her 19 year old daughter Ty. They are going to have a life changing experience. When they return, they are going to write a book for Zondervan about the trip and about Children's HopeChest. Will you please pray for them, they will return to the states on Feb 3. They will then begin to write the book. All proceeds will be given to Children's HopeChest. I hope you will pray and buy a copy of the book when it is released.
